I'd like to learn how to sew (with a sewing machine, preferably) at home. Do you have a recommendation for a really good, easy-to-understand system that I should use?

It has to be not too expensive, and must be geared toward people with no sewing experience AT ALL. I'd prefer one that comes with videos/dvds instead of just a book, but if anyone has had good results with a certain book then feel free to recommend it too :)

Thanks!

Go to the library and take out a few books, then you can just scan or photocopy certain pages. The main things are: reading a pattern, knowing what material to buy and how much, threading and maintaining your sewing machine, cutting and marking a pattern, sewing seams, darts, and gathering.
There are patterns made for the beginner called 'Sew Easy', and such. Stay away from inserting zippers until you've gotten the hang of the basics. Good luck.

  • I just saw the new video and i thought it was pretty awesome, but i noticed that there was someone else screaming the vocals:

"with my eyes sewn shut, to shut down and bathe in these words about me. and now you're standing alone with your eyes to the sun, standing alone with your eyes to the sun."

can someone please tell me who this is? i don' think it's anyone in the band, because he doesn't look familiar at all.

  • Hi,my sons (8 and 9)really enjoy putting together montages of their favourite films and tv programmes. They usually put a sound track to it and put it altogether with movie maker. upto now they have edited other peoples videos of Youtube or used the media files installed as part of video games Lego stuff mainly!
what software will allow them to capture short sections of any video played on the computer,so that they can create a stock of video shorts which they can "sew" together using Windows movie maker?

If you want a free software you can use CamStudio http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/CamStudio-freeware-Windows-Free-video-screen-capture-software-supporting-audio-recording.htm
Others not free are Cantasia studio http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp
or Pixelmetrics http://www.pixelmetrics.com/ this one is very usefull, apart from capturing video an pictures can scroll the page to capture an entire page in a picture

  • Hello all, just learning to sew :-) So apparently for the machine to feed the fabric through, the pressure foot must be lowered. in all the videos ive found on the web, there is a lever next to the needle that will do this. i cant find my lever. i have singer fashion-mate 360 (my mother’s) with no manual. please help?

    Go to http://sewingonline.co.uk/machines/singer360
( if they truncate the link then copy this and close up the spaces: )
    http://sewingonline.co.uk /machines /singer360

Scroll down to the picture of the back of the machine and then you can see the position of the lever for lowering the presser foot. If the lever on your machine is gone, then it is broken off and will need to be taken in for repair.

  • Its completely legal and they cant sue you. Ever see those video game shows on tv where they show videos of them playing video games while rating the games? What about a Nintendo power magazine? not all of those are nintendos games.

  • I just bought my first sewing machine and I give all of you sewers so much credit. I have the Singer 1507 model and I'm having so much trouble with the bottom thread, and maybe even the top!
Are there any video's or down loads that someone is aware of? For some reason I am have a difficult time with the drawings. I need to watch someone set up the machine so I can copy at the same time. PLEASE any suggestions?

Any chance you can return the machine? The reason I'm saying this is that new machines in this price range, in my experience, are rather finicky about adjustments, don't hold tensions well, and you can't get parts if something breaks, so the machine is essentially disposable. For about the same price, you can probably find a much better used machine in a local sewing machine shop, serviced and ready to go, and someone to take you through the basic threading and operation.

Otherwise, I'd suggest Singer's own threading diagrams, here:
http://www.singerco.com/resources/threading.html — I think the machine you chose has the thread path from the right hand diagram.
    And for bobbins,

    and

If this machine did come from a fabric store, there's some chance that someone there can go through basic threading with you, but it looks like this one is normally available in big box stores, where chances of finding someone to help are much slimmer.

Or if you can find anyone who sews, they can undoubtedly walk you through it… all machines thread much the same.

I might also suggest this video, which takes a new sewing student through machine use and through construction of a shirt:

  • I need to help my brother sew some things for a play he’s the technical director for. I know how to hand sew but for the stuff I’m making a sewing machine will have stronger stitches and will result in a lesser chance that It’ll break on stage. Any youtube.com videos or websites that may aid me in learning quickly?

Check out the How to Sew series of videos at Expert Village.

Scroll down a bit and you’ll find “how to sew with a machine.”

  • I have one tiny 1' portion of my clothes I would like to sew. I have never took needles and thread in hand. can you show me how? The hardest part for me is how do you end it with making nut at the end? how do you do that? Any video showing ?

Take a needle. Put the cut end through the eye of the needle.

Cut from the spool when you have a 20" double length of thread.

Wrap the cut ends around your index finger about three times and roll off into a knot.

However, no knot is needed if you make three tiny stitches, one on top of the other to anchor the end of the thread at the beginning of the stitching and at the end of the stitching.
